2. I need help/advice (and I need to vent). There are a few things amiss in our apartment. The first is spiders. We have quite a few, but hey, it's a basement and the landlady said that they come out more in the fall. As long as they don't bite me in the middle of the night (which has happened once since we moved in) I can deal with spiders; they don't scare me. A few days ago Jed sprayed some industrial spray that Adam & Amanda gave us, and it seems to be working so far, so we'll see how that goes.
The second thing (and this is where the advice/counsel/help comes into place) is that when we run the dishwasher, we've recently found rust-colored liquid in the dishwasher/on our dishes at the end of the cycle. I emailed the landlady (who lives in another state) about this, knowing that it couldn't be our "old dishes rusting" because all of our stuff is new, and she said that it's most-likely the racks rusting which can pretty much only be fixed by getting a new dishwasher. She says that they don't have the money for that, but they're willing to take up to $100 off our rent for the cost of a repairman to come look at it.
Dishwashers are only a few hundred dollars, right? I don't understand why we can't just get a new dishwasher for $100-150 more than they are willing to pay for someone to come look at it? Especially if she said it was unfixable? So here we are, having to choose between washing *every single item* by hand, or possibly ingesting rust that has settled on our dishes.
Any insights? Comments? Anything?? What would you do in this situation?

Oooo... Spiders! You can obviously handle it better than I could! dishwasher - 1. you're spoiled you have one ;) 2. my sister went through the same situation - a guy didn't come and check theirs for a few weeks so they dealt with it by hand washing the dishes. As long as they're willing to pay for it! and you'd get $100 off rent - find a guy to look at it for a sec and see what they say. With his word and what he'd say you could perhaps convince the land lady you need a new washer. I don't think it'd hurt to have a guy look at it fast, if they're paying for it. then you can tell the land lady you've done all you could that is possible? or if you buy a new one - you can take it with you when you move! ... hmm, that's my thinkings about it at least.
i would take a look at your rental contract. see what it says about repairs and replacing things like your dishwasher. hold the landlady to what the contract says. if she refuses, you can legally get out of your contract (if you feel like that's the best option). if that doesn't work in getting her to replace it, i would just go ahead and have a repair guy come out. you never know, that might not be the issue and he may be able to fix it.
Good comments so far. I'd check with your contract too and see if it's worth maybe saving up and buying one for yourself that you can take to a new place if you need it. Heck, you can never go wrong buying appliances for yourself, because then you're guaranteed to have one wherever you go! :)
